Transparency, Inclusion and Engagement (T.I.E.)
The Ugandan American Council (UAC) participates in community outreach that aligns with the organization’s core values: Transparency, Inclusion and Engagement (T.I.E.).
Providing for the needs of each and all of our citizens is central to our activities. Through inclusive collaboration, we gain understanding of the specific needs that matter most to Ugandan Americans across the United States. We facilitate open and honest conversations among our community members about mental health, and wellness, with particular focus on autism spectrum disorder among the youth, recognizing that the condition is largely misunderstood or ignored.
We encourage social integration by actively developing and participating in events that promote our individual and combined cultural identities. The core UAC principle of inclusion is closely aligned with Dr. John Berry’s perspective on acculturation. We strive to enable Ugandan Americans to adapt to the prevailing cultural norms, without sacrificing their heritage. Recognizing that balancing dual-cultural perspectives is key, we aim to support Ugandan Americans navigate those cultural shifts that inevitably induce psychological adjustments due to the differences in societal norms, expectations, languages and social frameworks. With this in mind, we host training programs and seminars across the country, covering a variety of topics that are relevant to promoting the nurture and advancement of our people, while raising awareness about socio-cultural issues that affect us. We attend and exhibit at local and national events that are aligned with our vision, and foster deeper relationships among leaders within these communities. We source, create and market items that highlight our mission while simultaneously providing mutually beneficial returns to the organization, its members and stakeholders.
We strategically partner with other organizations and businesses that share our passion, and whose purposes align with ours. We actively seek out and engage with key influencers who can provide insights and recommendations for continued development among our people. Using these additional voices and platforms, we foster greater collaboration and boost our reach to new targets in other sectors of the society at large. This helps us ensure that our causes become more visible, thereby giving Ugandan Americans more opportunities to be seen and attract support for the causes that we care about.
